These behemoths are North America’s largest land animal. Although  they might look slow they can run up to 40mph! Down to around 500,000  nationwide today, there used to be 30 million Bison roaming free  throughout plains. In the 1800’s they were nearly wiped out, a  population of only 1,000 remained as people moved west. Thanks to the  National Park system and many preservation societies Bison are seeing a  small comeback. Do not pass up a chance to see one of these rare  beautiful animals roaming the grassy fields of the West.
